Adorable simplicity.

21 years old belgian Amelie returns to Japan after sixteen years abroad. While studying and writing, she decides to teach french to earn some living. Young shy Rinri is her first student; in time they become friends, and much more. Culture differences are going to clash, things are going to get very complicated.

Loved it. This book felt like reading a personal diary, or a story being told by a close friend. A very funny, sometimes very self-absorbed, friend. No overly complicated or flowery vocabulary, just something extremely down to earth. Deep, without trying. Masterful in its simplicity. Some parts dragged, especially chapter 20, or when she purposely tries to sound deep, but overall a wonderfully positive experience. I must confess I find Nothomb reputation as one of the best Belgian authors very well deserved. Plentiful amount of moments to remember by. Moving to the sequel and looking forward to read more of her books.

Adorable simplicidad.

Belga Amelie de 21 años regresa a Japón después de dieciséis años en el extranjero. Mientras estudia y escribe, decide enseñar francés para ganarse la vida. El joven y tímido Rinri es su primer alumno; con el tiempo se vuelven amigos, y mucho más. La diferencia de culturas va a chocar, las cosas van a volverse muy complicadas.

Lo amé. Este libro se sintió como leer un diario personal, o una historia contada por un amigo cercano. Un muy gracioso, a veces muy ensimismado, amigo. Sin demasiado complicado o florido vocabulario, solo algo extremadamente realista. Profundo, sin tratar. Magistral en su simplicidad. Algunas partes arrastran, especialmente el capítulo 20, o cuando intencionalmente trata de sonar profundo; pero dentro de todo una experiencia maravillosamente positiva. Debo confesar que hallo la reputación de Nothomb como una de las mejores autoras belgas muy bien merecida. Abundantes momentos para el recuerdo. Pasando a la secuela y con ansias de leer más de sus libros.
