it was amazing

Germany was the host country of the 1936 Olympics. At first, Hitler wanted to cancel the Olympics, but then he realized it could be used to promote his PR objectives.

1) Hitler wanted to demonstrate that the Germans were an unbeatable "master" race, but athletes like Jesse Owens and the American rowers from the University of Washington proved him wrong.

2) Hitler wanted to convince countries like France, Britain, and the United States that Hitler wasn't a threat, so he'd have time to build an army, navy, and air force without interference. Unfortunately, Hitler was successful in this regard.

My personal hero in this book was "Bobby Moch, the savvy little coxswain" because Granddaughter is a savvy little coxswain.

Granddaughter has always been very athletic and very good at sports that don't involve a ball. Recently, she's been looking for a sport where being short wasn't a handicap. She recently mentioned this to her doctor, and he replied, "Girl, I know the perfect sport for you." He then told her about a local rowing club.

The coxswain is also the boss of the boat, and Granddaughter has no problem with that.

That was me too! And it was almost every day because my daughter and son are close in age. (I loved it though.)

CoachJim Your Granddaughter sounds like a little spitfire. Good luck to her.

Morgan The Olympics proved a boon for Hitler - never understood how it happened to be held in Berlin...anyway history is history. Your granddaughter sounds like a champion in the making. I'm thrilled for you Tim. Oh, BTW great review and thanks for the personal touch.

Tim Null Thanks so very much, Morgan. The International Olympic Committee selected Berlin over Barcelona in 1931. I don't know why, but Hitler didn't rise to power until 1933.

Yes Tim, but surely there were rumblings before 1933. They just gave Hitler a world wide podium.

Tim Null Gosh, Morgan, it would take several books to fully explore the issues you've raised. One of which would be Prequel by Rachel Maddow. I've bought a copy of that book as a Christmas present for my wife.

I'm sure you're right Tim. I respect Rachel Maddow - will have to look into her book.

Tim Null I wasn't trying to give you a reading list, Morgan. I was just admitting how little I know and how much more I need to learn.

I didn't think you were giving me a reading list Tim. Not at all. I don't know any more than you do, probably way less. I too need and would like to learn more. Especially subjects that interest me - as does this one.
