it was amazing

I found this to be an incredibly moving and humanistic story, full of anger, tragedy, joy, and the elements that make for a great novel. It's a story any person in any country can relate to. The writing is beautiful and reads like a parable more than straight documentation or history, which was her intent, and a tribute to many of the old Chinese tales I've read (now reading it at an older age, I see a lot of references and tributes to other Chinese works I had not known of before). That is also part of its allure and I don't know if I could have appreciated it as much if I had not read it when I was younger first. =)

Arah-Lynda Wonderful review of a favourite read.

Thank you! =)

Lela Well written as always, Peter. You asked an excellent question. Even as an American, I am ever astonished at our particular arrogance.

Sketchbook Pearl Buck was belittled by grumpy-jealous (?) male critics of the 40s-50s, but her contributions to race relations, feminism, humanitarian issues are now being recognized.

Lela Sketchbook, that sounds like the correct answer.

Sketchbook I was hoping you'd notice.

Thanks Sketchbook, I was reading up on that and it's an awful shame because she's so talented and just an incredibly humanistic and thoughtful writer. The more I read about her contributions, the more I marvel at her and her sense of humanity really shines through in her writing. The kind of writers who not just write about something but live it as well are the ones I love the most =)

Tara They just published a "lost" novel by her. Forgot the name. I bought it for my mother, a huge fan of Buck's. Don't know how it holds up, but worth looking into if you like her work. Amazon has it.

Hey Tara, yes, I was tempted to buy it as it was on sale during Cyber Monday for only 2.99, but I have a backlog of like 30 books so I'll eventually get to it unless someone tells me I should drop everything and read it, lol. Thanks for the note though!

Tara I know, I love Goodreads but whenever I get on and look at all the status updates and see sooo many different great books, it gets mighty overwhelming.

Lela Amen to that! Oh, Peter, you're a piker! I have at least 90 books waiting & that doesn't include my Kindle books or the ones on iPad. But, I'd toss them to the corner if (when) you publish your novel! =)

Hi Tara, I hear you, and that's part of why I love GR so much, lol. I've sometimes wondered if i spend so much time writing so I can digest what I've read, clear up space, then suck up some more, lol. If you do ever read the Pearl Buck book, please let me know! =) thanks again

Lela, thank you so much for saying that! I'll try to wait until that stack of 90 dwindles to a much smaller number before publishing anything then, lol =)

Aaron Million Excellent and succinct review!
