Jaidee, I got through page 190 of this and then put it aside. For one thing, it felt as if it was going nowhere. I haven't officially abandoned it, but I just might.

Haha, your review made me laugh! I did like it a lot but I read it maybe a decade ago and I do wonder how I'd react to the fetishization of Japanese culture if I read it now.

Loved your review, Jaidee. I read this quite awhile ago, more than five years I think, but for some reason I remember enjoying it's weirdness. Can't explain it though. Just a strange phase I guess. ; )

This does seem one of those love/hate books. I came down on the love side but also love your review :-) Of course the hedgehog is a winner!

I hated this and gave up after 100 pages. Had the same problems as you did. I also enjoyed Veronika decides to die more than this one :))

haha thanks Adina....I didn't hate as there were some sections that were just gorgeous but overall this was a dud :)

Have to say I fall into the hate category on this one. It was so pretentious that I wanted to quit but it was a group read from my library so I sadly had to finish. Ugh!

Jaidee, I landed on a website in which the 'Dreyfuss Code of Ratings' was discussed. I was thinking about you, and laughed again for your comments about this book. Lauren Tarshis, Dreyfuss. Since links are not allowed in comments, I will paste the short version of it for you. I was thinking of changing some of my book shelf titles. I was considering asking your permission to use '' -pretentious prattle galore'.

Here are some of the Dreyfuss code of ratings:
RB: Readable Banality
RP: Readable Piffle
NFM: Not For Me
DNF: Did Not Finish
DNR: Did Not Read
RP+1: One Step Up From "RP"
RPM: Readable Piffle Mystery - (my favorite—love the word 'piffle')
G: Good, Different, Holds My Attention
VB: Very Bad
NMS: Not My Style
PB: Pretty Boring
NBAA: Not Bad At All
RR: Readable
WOT: Waste Of Time
