bookshelves: graphic-novels, buddy-read, read-in-2015, sci-fi

So. Saga, right?

description

I was starting to feel like the only person in the universe who hadn't read Vaughan's supposedly fantastic title. But I don't generally go for the weird shit. Especially if they don't wear spandex.
And I knew if I hated this, the comic book mafia would be coming for me.
I'm a big enough person that I can admit that I was really really a little scared of my fellow nerdlings being disappointed in me.
However, unlike my fear of giant soul sucking spiders, this fear turned out to be foolish and unrealistic.

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH!

Would you like to do this to someone who pimps out children?
Me too! OMG! We have soooo much in common!

description

And don't even get me started on Alana. She's possibly the most wonderfully realistic woman ever put down on paper. Ever! I could honestly spend the entire review just gushing about how funny this chick was.
When it opens, Alana is giving birth to Hazel. BEST birthing scene EVER!
"Am I shitting? It feels like I'm shitting!"
I was like, OMG! That's me! I said the same thing!
(view spoiler)

And Marko cutting the umbilical cord?
Well, I'm using the word cutting loosely.

description

The plot centers around these two and their infant daughter, as they go on the run from the government that wants them dead. Marko, for escaping a work camp/prison. Alana, for deserting the army. It's a love story!
Only...with really insane looking alien species.
So, the lovebirds are on the run from bounty hunters and a prince with a tv head.
I swear! He has a tv for a head!

description

Anyway, there are a couple of these bounty hunters on their trail, including The Will. He's a slice of awesomeness, but his partner steals the show. Lying Cat.
I want one! Who agrees with me? We all need a Lying Cat!

description

This story is just fantastic. If you have kids, it might even be more fantastic for you. It's funny, interesting, action packed, and there were a couple of times I turned the page and went GASP!
Good stuff, good stuff.
If you're like me and tend to skirt around the weird stuff, don't let that stop you this time. It's just about the most honest, least weird, being married with children story I've ever read.
Highly Recommended to Everyone!

PS-
Giant Thank You to my friend, Mike, for gifting me this book. Sara's right, you're definitely a great guy.

Thanks, Ronyell. I'm glad I finally got a chance to see what all the fuss was about!

I did . . . and then I almost immediately deleted it from the feed because I'm an imbecile.

Logan I read the first issue of this but that's all.

Of course you are. Naturally, I've never done anything like that. *cough*

Alejandro Awesome review, Anne ;) Definitely this is a comic book series that I want to read.

Anne I can't believe I'm just now getting to join this club. I didn't even know what I was missing!

message 39: by Ryan (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ryan Stewart It might not seem possible but I honestly think it's only gotten better (through the end of Vol. 4)

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Had I not already read this your review would have convinced me to read it:P Btw, weird is good. Always.

Anne Ryan wrote: "It might not seem possible but I honestly think it's only gotten better (through the end of Vol. 4)"

I'm so glad you say that. I've heard mixed reviews about some of the other volumes. I have the omnibus, but I had to break it up to do this buddy read with Boar and the Book Kelly.

Anne oOSarahOo wrote: "Had I not already read this your review would have convinced me to read it:P Btw, weird is good. Always."

Go Fetch! was weird. LOL

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Hey, I wouldn't know, I still haven't read it. It was weirdly awful more than awfully weird right? Can't wait to find out if it's worse than Pack Challenge. I really hope it is haha.

message 44: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Oh, Pack Challenge was leaps and bounds above Go Fetch!

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Oh really? That's kind of disappointing. I was looking forward to reading something *really* craptastic.

message 46: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Hang on...no. I rated it 3 stars. But the sex scenes were faaaar squickier.

✘✘ Sarah ✘✘ (former Nefarious Breeder of Murderous Crustaceans) Anne wrote: "Hang on...no. I rated it 3 stars. But the sex scenes were faaaar squickier."

Aha! I knew it had to be worse somehow! Bumping it up!

message 48: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne Oh, you'll get your moneys worth.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) So my library doesn't have awesome stuff like Saga, but it has BOTH Go Fetch and Pack Challenge. I don't think I want to live on this planet anymore.

message 50: by Anne (new) - rated it 5 stars

Anne I say that every day. Also, my library doesn't have Saga, but has that entire other series.
Boo!
