Rules for creating a Reading Challenge in this group

Thanks
Could you start a section where readers can start and keep track doing a 1,000,000,000 page challenge? Open ended.

Let me ask the other mods about this and I'll get back to you.

Let me revisit it. Thanks!

I've noticed that a lot of members are reading/watching Game of Thrones, and I thought it might be fun to design a challenge based on the Houses (Mottos/Sigils), similar to the Harry Potter Challenge. Would that be ok?

I really like this idea. Can't find any other threads about it. Did anything come of this?

Sounds good!

Yes, we Mods did discuss it, Rhonda, and never came to a decision. There is another major GRs group that is doing this and, given NBRC's history, we are all a little skittish about "borrowing" this idea. I'll bring it up again in the Mod group.

Nope I don't believe we have one. I'll send you a friend request so we can discuss it.

Title Twins Challenge
Have you ever been looking for a title on goodreads, found other books by the same title, and thought oh, that looks good, too...? If so this challenge is for you!
A pair of books with the same title but by different authors are book "title twins."
- For each pair of title twins you read, you get one point.
- If you read a pair of title twins in different genres, you get one additional point.
- If you read a pair of title twins with 4 or more words in the title, you get two additional points.
- Ignoring article words ("The, A/An") and subtitles is ok for determining twinship.
- If both titles have it, then one article ("the, a/an") is ok to count towards your 4 words in a title.
For example:
1 point: Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini and Star Crossed by Elizabeth C. Bunce (both young adult fantasy)
2 points: Tipping Point by Fred Marchant (poetry) and The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell (essay nonfiction)
3 points: The Twelve Dancing Princessesby Marianna Meyer and The Twelve Dancing Princesses by Ellen Miles (both juvenile/middle grade fairy tale retellings).
4 points: Snow White And Rose Red by Patricia Wrede (YA fairy tale) and Snow White and Rose Red by Ed McBain (crime fiction)
Choose your level: 10 Twins or 20 Twins, and we'll see who has the most points in the challenge at each level!
Open ended - take as long as you want to compete.

I have just recently made a challenge based on The Walking Dead Tv show on my group and was wondering if yo would like to use it here?
I noticed you have a Game of Thrones challenge and thought you like another tv show challenge.
Let me know what you think!

Where you read books you bought in 2013 or earlier, but haven't read yet.

Marguerite, we are starting one January 1, 2014, at which time the thread will be 'unfrozen.' It is posted here.

Names in Title
Queen/King
Prince/Princess
Duke/Duchess
Earl/Countess
Marquis
Lord/Lady
Can't think of more at the moment, but I'm sure there are more. I'm sure this could be tweaked a lot.
Someone beat you to that one, ~Leslie~. Check out Titled Titles, though it is a little more restrictive. Or are you thinking "Title Pairs," or some such?

Not for one that long. First, you would have to find an author that has written 26 books. And they would all have to start with a different letter of the alphabet.

Ah! Got it now, Angell. Thanks for explaining. Then you want our Read Your Favorite Authors Challenge.

Yep, we do it's called Read Your Favorite Author Challenge. To get to the challenge CLICK HERE

It would be a non-fiction challenge, with several options. You could either just read a book from each of the 10 main headings (10 books). Or you could read a book from each of the subheadings (although encyclopaedias and dictionaries might need to be left out!). Or you could pick one heading and read from each of the subheadings. There's plenty of options.
I suspect someone might have already done this, but if not, it could be fun?

Do you know if there could be a Yearly challenge for completing series?
Jessica (Goldenfurpro) wrote: "Hey, I know you guys have the Never Ending Series Challenge, but as the challenge is Never ending, I don't have any incentive at all to complete any of my book series (and I really really need to d..."
We're discussing some options for something like that. If you have any particular idea's feel free to send a PM.

I have a suggestion for an open-ended, no-set-time-limit, group challenge which may be either extremely difficult to pull off or an act of plagiarism. Read books by authors born on every day of the year, from January 1 to December 31. It would comprise at least 365 books. What do you think?
Jim

I've already made this challenge in another group, but maybe it can be tweaked or something. I'm not sure if there's already a similar challenge here though. Here it is, and you can tell me your opinions.
Disney Song Challenge
Rules:
Duration:take as long as you like
Levels:
1. Diva in the Shower 5-10
2. Queen of Disney Parties 10-15
3. Broadway Star 15-20
4. Disney Princess 20+
You can tick of the songs from your playlist in two ways:
1. Word for Word: find a book that has the same word in its title as the title of the song that you're “listening to”
ex. Circle of Life – The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult
One book per song is enough for the easy level. If you want to make the challenge last longer you can find a corresponding title for as many words as you can.
ex. Circle of Life – The Tenth Circle by Jodi Picoult
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
2. Song Meaning: read a book in which one of the characters has a situation similar in to the part of the movie the song was sung.
Cheat sheet for the songs:
(view spoiler)
You can also mix both ways.
Have fun!

Although some of the books are the same as Boxall's 1001 books to read before you die, many are different.
Is this a challenge we could do?
Thanks!

I saw the all about me challenges, but they were more Spell it Out, and this one is a bit more personalized.

The slog challenge:
Do you have a book you're struggling through? This challenge will be just the kick in the butt you need! Yearly challenge
For example:
I struggled through Les Misérablesfor 3 years before restarting for the 4th time from where i stopped yesterday.
Other books i'm struggling with:
Atlas Shrugged tried reading 3 times.
Pride and Prejudicetried reading 4 times
1Q84on a break from reading right now!
Books mentioned in this topic
Jane Eyre (other topics)Agnes Grey (other topics)
The Professor (other topics)

Rules for posting challenges in Nothing but Reading Challenges
1) Posting a challenge from another group, unless you are the creator of it, is considered plagiarism. Therefore, we ask you not do so because we would need permission to use it.
2) If creativity hits you, we ask you run it by us just to make sure it fits our group. Most likely it'll be fine, but if there was some conflict, we'd hate for you to go through the trouble of writing it up and having us remove it.
3) We would rather you not use our challenges as a means to promote your or someone else's blog. We'd probably move the post to the blog promotions section, although we have made exceptions in the past.
4) We ask that you keep it clean, as we do have some younger members.
