I think everything that was jammed into this book had purpose, there was meaningful conversations and conflict that had to happen the way it did. While the things that Shannon and her siblings endured are heartbreaking by the end of Keeping 13 we see them grow as people both together and individually and you couldn’t ask for anything better from the situation. That does not go without noting just how much Johnny had a play in this, if it weren’t for him and his heart of gold along with his parents it’s hard to say where this story would’ve ended. Mrs. Kavanagh is an absolute saint of a woman and I admire her so much for the strength and love she showed the Lynch kids after tragedy struck. The found family in both Binding 13 and Keeping 13 is truly my favorite part of the two books. You can tell that Johnny is the way he is because of the parents who raised him and I loved that so much. The way he treats Shannon with such dignity and respect, the way he lets her learn to love herself first before acting upon his feelings, also makes sure she knows she is safe, loved and wanted. It’s just truly something special to read. I couldn’t write a review without mentioning Gibsie’s character, I think his character was incredibly important to a story like this. I appreciate his loyalty to his best friend Johnny and the comedic relief he supplied throughout the story. Gibsie is one in a million, he loves his people and will go to war for them all while being the fun loving goofball and I just adored him. Serious when it matters, funny when it’s needed. And you couldn’t ask for anything better. There is so much more I could write but this book makes you feel all the feels and it’s worth the long journey for the ending that you get. Johnny and Shannon are one of my favorite couples ever written, it’s much more than a romance story, it’s a story of survival, perseverance and growth, it is beautifully written and I am glad I took the chance on it. ...more "
