Dear Andrew,
The language you quote is stated by a character who is transparently an ugly, immoral, and reprehensible figure. These are exactly the sorts of things that he would think and say. As a result, the book calls attention to the reprehensibleness of his antisemitsm.
It is the job of the writer to depict people in a manner that is consistent with their time, upbringing and personality. It is not the job of the writer to whitewash them or reality. (less)

Dear Kathy,
For a few years, RULES OF CIVILITY has been in development at Lionsgate to make a feature film. Recently, however, Lionsgate has shifted course and decided to make it into a long form television movie/series - so that they don't have to cut the story. Now, cross your fingers and wait.

“After all, what can a first impression tell us about someone we’ve just met for a minute in the lobby of a hotel? For that matter, what can a first impression tell us about anyone? Why, no more than a chord can tell us about Beethoven, or a brushstroke about Botticelli. By their very nature, human beings are so capricious, so complex, so delightfully contradictory, that they deserve not only our consideration, but our reconsideration—and our unwavering determination to withhold our opinion until we have engaged with them in every possible setting at every possible hour.”
Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow

“if a man does not master his circumstances then he is bound to be mastered by them.”
Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow

“...what matters in life is not whether we receive a round of applause; what matters is whether we have the courage to venture forth despite the uncertainty of acclaim.”

The most important time of the year has come! It's time to exercise your democratic duty and vote on book club picks for the rest of the year. It's a momentous decision.

As per any true election, write-ins are an option (and encouraged!), and here they actually count towards the result. We will be selecting the top picks to pad out our scheduled reads for the rest of the year

You don’t have to read the book nor do you have to participate in our discussions. All we ask for is help in choosing what books to read whether you are a member or not.
