Marv is a penniless hulking brute from the most forgotten part of Sin City, but one lucky night he finds heaven in the arms of the most beautiful woman he has ever seen— Goldie— only to find her dead the morning next, and he being framed for the murder. Who wanted this angel dead? And why? One way or another, Marv is going to find out. This was a very fine comic, and just by having experienced the first of seven issues I can see where it legendary fame comes from. The storytelling is simple yet also very dark and complex. The full story neatly divided into 13 short chapters of 8-12 pages each. The characters all but marginal, rogue and violent, yet everyone extremely compelling in their own twisted way. Marv, Goldie, Lucille, Wendy, Roark, all fantastic. The illustrations are beautifully artistic, exceptionally well designed, and drawing a lot of attention to themselves, my only gripe that I couldn't understand some of them. The black and white style is undeniably unique and with a superb neo-noir vibe. I have very few comics in my shelves, most acquired randomly during my childhood; and even though I read this digitally, this is one of few exceptions that I wouldn't mind owing in physical format, to feel, glance and admire once in a while. All in all, this was a superb comic, an even though it wasn't exactly a favorite, still looking forward to reading and completing the rest of the series very, very soon. **** The movie (2005) is an admirable adaptation, capturing much of the comic's soul and style. Mickey Rourke playing a fantastic Marv. Kevin the creepiest thing on earth, as much as in the comic. Flawless scenography, casting and ambience, with several unforgettable moments not easy to forget. So dark, and violent! Yet masterful in its way. Extremely faithful to the book. Highly recommendable. Marv es un pobre bruto descomunal de la parte más olvidada de la Ciudad del Pecado, pero una noche afortunada encuentra el cielo en los brazos de la mujer más hermosa que haya visto jamás— Goldie— sólo para encontrarla muerta a la mañana siguiente y él incriminado por su asesinato. ¿Quién quería ver a este ángel muerta? ¿Y por qué? De una forma u otra, Marv lo va a averiguar. Este fue un cómic muy muy bueno y con sólo haber experimentado el primero de siete volúmenes puedo ver de dónde proviene su legendaria fama. La narración es simple pero también muy oscura y compleja. La historia completa bellamente dividida en 13 cortos capítulos de 8 a 12 páginas cada uno. Los personajes son todos marginales, rebeldes y violentos, pero cada uno de ellos extremadamente atrapantes en su retorcida forma. Marv, Goldie, Lucille, Wendy, Roark, todos fantásticos. Las ilustraciones son hermosamente artísticas, excepcionalmente bien diseñados y llaman mucho la atención, mi única queja que no pude entender algunas de ellas. El estilo en blanco y negro es innegablemente único y con un magnífico toque neo-noir. Tengo muy pocos cómics en mis estantes, la mayoría adquiridos al azar durante mi infancia; y aunque leo esto digitalmente, esta es una de pocas excepciones que no me importaría tener también en formato físico, para sentir, mirar y admirar de vez en cuando. A grandes cuentas, este fue un cómic excelente, y aunque no fuera exactamente uno de mis favoritos, igualmente espero leer y completar el resto de la serie muy, muy pronto. **** La película (2005) es una adaptación admirable, que captura en gran medida el alma y estilo del cómic. Something wrong is happening at Crouch End—strange creatures, weird sightings, pets disappearing... and now, people! Police officers Ted Vetter and Robert Farnham work the night shift at a small London station near Crouch End, when a young woman, on the verge of mental breakdown, frantically bursts into the station desperately reporting that someone—or something—has taken her husband. Nobody wants to admit it but, deep down, they all know it: It's happening again! This was good, very nice. Somewhat like King's version of Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu, but with a far more simpler delivery. I thoroughly enjoyed the eerie progression of the story and the general idea of the plot. Everything felt on place and the characters fleshed out and real, as always with the King. Sadly I had already watched a short adaptation long ago with Claire Forlani and though not many details stuck with me, I still remembered much of the general idea of the plot, so the surprise was totally lost. Still good, and I'm positive I'd have enjoyed this so much more if I hadn't watched it first. King is the King. *** Crouch End (2006) is a cool adaptation episode. Quite short, 44m only, but good enough to capture most of the plot and reasonably faithful to King's work. A decent performance by Eion Bailey and a very memorable Claire Forlani, my third favorite from her after 'Meet Joe Black' and 'Boys and Girls' (I've watched almost all her filmography). Pero igual sigue siendo bueno y estoy seguro que lo habría disfrutado mucho más si no lo hubiera visto antes. King es el Rey. *** Crouch End (2006) es una interesante adaptación y episodio. Bastante corto, sólo 44 m, pero lo suficientemente bueno como para capturar la mayor parte de la trama y razonablemente fiel al trabajo de King. Una decente actuación de Eion Bailey y una muy memorable Claire Forlani, mi tercera favorita de ella después de '¿Conoces a Joe Black?' y 'Chicos y Chicas' (he visto casi toda su filmografía). A collection of twelve short stories by Nobel laureate Gabriel García Marquez; “Innocent Erendira” being closer to a novella than a shortie. Well, all I have to say is that this collection sucked! Big time! Leaving “Innocent Erendira” aside, which is classic Marquez in all his glorious crudeness and blunt objectification, this was mostly a complete waste of time. The grand majority of these stories felt hallucinatory or nonsensical. And I just can’t stand nonsense literature, or dreamlike stories; I mean, if it’s a dream, what’s the point? And if I can’t understand it, or tell the difference between dream and reality, then what’s the f*cking point? I dunno, maybe there IS a point, I just don’t get it; like symbolism, it just escapes my mortal understanding. Like Strange Pilgrims: Twelve Stories, I found most of Gabo’s short stories wildly underwhelming. which makes me think this cannot be just a coincidence; especially considering how much I enjoyed many of his other works. So either his short stories suck in general, or I just can’t find an affinity with them. Gabo’s full novels have always been pretty good though, memorable, and usually more than worth it. So in case of doubt, I recommend to just stick with the good stuff. Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh. Una colección de doce cuentos cortos por el laureado Nobel Gabriel García Marquez; siendo “Cándida Erendira” algo más cercano una novela corta que un cuento. Bueno, sólo tengo para decir que esta colección ¡apesta! ¡Y mucho! Dejando “Cándida Eréndira” de lado, que es el clásico Marquez en toda su gloriosa crudeza y brutal cosificación, esta fue en su mayor parte una completa pérdida de tiempo. La gran mayoría de estas historias se sintió alucinatoria o sin sentido. Y simplemente no puedo soportar la literatura sin sentido, o historias tipo sueño; o sea, si es un sueño ¿cuál es el punto? Y si no puedo entenderlo, o ver la diferencia entre sueño y realidad ¿cuál es el m*ldito punto? No sé, tal vez HAY un punto, pero yo no puedo verlo; como el simbolismo, escapa totalmente mi mortal entendimiento. Como Doce Cuentos Peregrinos, hallé la mayoría de los cuentos cortos de Gabo terriblemente decepcionantes, lo cual me hace pensar que no puede ser simplemente una coincidencia; especialmente considerando lo mucho que disfruté muchas de sus otras obras. Así que sus historias cortas apestan en general, o yo no puedo tener sintonía con ellas. Sin embargo, las novelas completas de Gabo siempre fueron bastante buenas, memorables, y generalmente más que valiosas. Así que en caso de duda, yo recomiendo atenerse a lo bueno. Ir por lo Mejor, considerar lo Bueno, loquesea lo Meh. This was one lovely cutesy tale, and a real pleasure to finally know this famous story that so powerfully personifies Christmas. Being kind of a Grinch myself, in truth I can’t say I loved this book, or that it changed me into a crazed Christmas fan; but I didn’t hate it, and it was certainly endearing, and enjoyable, to an extent. The drawings of the Who people and specially the tiny little Cindy Lou were adorable, watching the “reindeer” was hilarious, and even loved some of the funny rhymes too, sometimes. A very powerful short story with beautiful pictures that perfectly conveys that special Christmas vibe. Any kid or adult with a Christmassy heart should love it, and deeply. Recommendable, and worthy of the half hour or less it takes to read it. Erase una vez un pequeño tipo verde que vivía en una cueva de las altas montañas. Odiaba tanto la Navidad, que decidió robarse todos los regalos para él mismo. Esta es la historia del Grinch, y cómo se robó la Navidad. Esta fue una adorable y empalagosa historia, y un verdadero placer finalmente conocer este famoso cuento que tan poderosamente personifica la Navidad. Siendo una especie de Grinch yo mismo, en verdad no puedo decir que amé este libro, o que me transformó en un alocado fan de la Navidad; pero no lo odié, y fue ciertamente entrañable, y disfrutable, hasta cierto punto. Los dibujos de la gente de villa Who y especialmente la pequeña Cindy Lou me parecieron adorables, ver el “venado” fue hilarante, e incluso disfruté algunas de las graciosas rimas, a veces. Un muy poderoso cuento corto con hermosas representaciones que perfectamente transmiten esa vibra especial de Navidad. Cualquier niño o adulto con corazón navideño seguramente lo amaría, y profundamente. Recomendable, y meritorio de la media hora o menos que toma leerlo. But over the years the owner becomes increasingly volatile, and the cat has a temper of its own. As a lover of all things animals, and especially of dogs and cats, I must say this little shortie hit a sensitive spot. So if you are one too, you might consider it a TW. Still, by all accounts, widely regarded as one of the finest stories Poe has ever written, and since it’s my personal second favorite of the man, I guess we can agree on that one. Estranged daughter of the dissimilar Marquis Ignacio and his devilish wife Bernarda, the youngling was mostly abandoned and practically raised by the house slaves. Her wild behavior and strange african speech sparking increasing concern of the medic and local authorities. Are her troubling antics just traits of an atypically raised child, or the onsetting symptoms of a maddening incurable disease? Quite possibly along with Chronicle of a Death Foretold, one of the best works of Garcia Marquez I’ve read so far. I especially enjoyed the sad and tragic backstories of Ignacio, Bernarda and Judas Iscariote. Didn’t particularly enjoy much the last part in the Convent of Santa Clara and Father Cayetano to be honest; but that scene with the hair… Jeez! That was really something. I’m positive I’ve read this book more than a decade ago and, re-skimming it today, I find again the reasons I enjoyed it so much then, and now. You can always count on good old Gabo, the almighty father of magical realism, to tell you a profoundly bittersweet tragic story that will perpetually endure within your memory for years and years to come, if not forever. Muy posiblemente con Crónica de una Muerte Anunciada, una de las mejores obras de Garcia Marquez que leí hasta el día. Especialmente disfruté la triste y trágica historia de fondo de Ignacio, Bernarda y Judas Iscariote. No me agradó particularmente mucho la última parte en el Convento de Santa Clara y el Padre Cayetano para ser sincero; pero esa escena con el pelo…. ¡Cielos! Eso sí fue increíble. Estoy convencido que leí este libro hace más de una década y, volviéndolo a repasar hoy, encuentro de nuevo las razones por las que lo disfruté tanto entonces, y ahora. Siempre podés contar con el buen Gabo, el padre todopoderoso del realismo mágico, para contarte una historia profundamente agridulce y trágica que perdurará perpetuamente en tu memoria por años y años por venir, si no es que para siempre. Ah-ah-ah-ow-ow-oo! Exceptional linguist Professor Henry Higgins meets gentleman Colonel Pickering and they whimsically set on crazy bet to pass off Ah-ah-ah-ow-ow-oo! Exceptional linguist Professor Henry Higgins meets gentleman Colonel Pickering and they whimsically set on crazy bet to pass off Eliza, a low class street flower girl, as a respectable royal lady of the high society. Little do they know Eliza has a few talents of her own. This was overall enjoyable, although with some reservations. The best of the play was by far Eliza, and the wildly eccentric Alfred Doolitle, they brought light and laughter whenever they appeared; Pickering always the gentleman, and Higgins turning increasingly obnoxious with each passing Act. The whole thing rather good until the bet was finally settled; after that sadly the characters and plot felt rather mediocre, making the last Act V an extremely dull thing to endure and the final resolution between Eliza, Higgins and Pickering utterly disappointing. The epilogue explanation was also the strangest thing, turning away from the normal theater dialogue to full descriptive storytelling, with events that didn’t really add much to the characters or storyline, further aggravating my dislike of an already disappointing ending. To me this play would have greatly benefited from an open ending finishing in Act IV (view spoiler)[ including the revised extended scene with Freddy. (hide spoiler)] WARNING: There are two versions out there, the Original (1914) and a later Revised edition (1941) with additional notes from the author, more detailed introductions, and extended scenes at the end of each Act, among other things. Personally I prefer the Revised edition, particularly because of the scenes with Nepommuck at the end of Act III, and Freddy at the end of IV. Another used book found in the dusty family bookcase. A neat find! One of the most famed and highly acclaimed plays of all time, with countless reproductions and adaptations, even as musical and film. Not my cup of tea really, but I believe its fame is well deserved; and though I did not enjoy it much, its potential is easily recognizable and could greatly appeal to certain palates, possibly more refined than mine. It’s public domain. You can find it HERE. [Original Version] *** My Fair Lady (1964) is an acceptable adaptation, for a musical at least (I hate them). Reasonably faithful to the book, despite the non-scripted songs. Admirable artistic value and justly deserving of the many awards received. First time watching an Audrey Hepburn movie, must say she really shined and Show Me some terrific acting. Professor Higgins as obnoxious as in the book, so proud of Never Let A Woman In Your Life. Still; With a Little Bit of Luck, you can stomach him. Overall the movie is good I guess, but I couldn’t care less if The Rain in Spain Stays Mainly in the Plain, or if Doolittle Gets to the Church on Time; and I Could Have lived without watching them Dance all Night. Poco saben ellos que Eliza guarda algunos talentos propios. Esto fue dentro de todo disfrutable, aunque con algunas reservas. Lo mejor de la obra fue por lejos Eliza, y especialmente el excéntrico Alfred Doolitle, trayendo luz y risas cuando sea que aparecían; Pickering siempre el caballero, y Higgins volviéndose cada vez más insoportable con cada Acto transcurrido. Christmas Eve is no exception, as he dismisses it as utter humbug. But that might change when a fatidic night, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future; and shown the error in his ways. I must admit I found this a very complicated reading, to the point I dragged this book for more than a month when it can be finished in a couple of days, or even hours. I could never grasp Dickens style of writing; excessively flowery, and overly convoluted. I skimmed quite a lot, and had difficulty understanding whatever else remained. Gave me quite a slump, for which in a way I’m grateful since it allowed me to review many past readings. Sadly I already knew much of the plot because I watched 'Scrooged' several decades ago. Maybe it also didn’t help that I’m kind of a Grinch regarding Christmas. Still, an immortal Christmas classic that requires no introduction. Recommendable, for the right audience. It’s public domain, you can find it HERE. *** A Christmas Carol (1984). Definitely the most faithful movie by far. Several quotations can be found through the whole film, which deviates little from the original script. George C. Scott plays a highly convincing Ebenezer. And also notable Warner, Rees and Tiny Tim. Aged well all things considered. Most recommendable for adults who want to enjoy a serious faithful adaptation. *** A Christmas Carol (2009). An animated film made by Disney. A reasonably faithful adaptation, with many direct quotations and stars like Carrey, Oldman and Firth performing voice acting. Remarkable special effects and action scenes that not necessarily go well with the book. Recommendable mostly for children, and adults with a child at heart that don’t mind going a bit off script. *** Scrooged (1988). A comedy retelling and the most unfaithful adaptation by far, and still my personal favorite! Bill Murray is magnificently hilarious from start to finish. Karen Allen also plays a completely adorable Claire (a crush for a time). Exceedingly easy to watch, funny, romantic, and very uplifting. Powerfully transmits that sickly sweet Christmas feeling, even to a Grinch like me. Highly recommendable for any audience. Pero eso podría cambiar cuando una fatídica noche es visitado por los Fantasmas de la Navidad Pasada, Presente y Futura; y comprender el error de sus maneras. Debo admitir que hallé esto una lectura bastante complicada, hasta el punto de que arrastré este libro por más de un mes cuando puede terminarse en un par de días, o incluso horas. Nunca pude ajustarme al estilo de escritura de Dickens; excesivamente florido, y demasiado enrevesado. Salteé algo bastante, y tuve dificultad para entender lo que sea que quedaba. Me dio un bloqueo importante, por el que estoy agradecido en cierta forma porque me dio la oportunidad de reseñar muchas lecturas pasadas. In the midst of the women’s liberation movement, a little town in Connecticut seems to show an inexplicable regression. Independent women are turning into cleaning maniacs and dedicated housewives. What the hell is happening? Something in the air? The water? Is it a disease? Is it contagious? Walter, Joanna Eberhart and their kids are new in Stepford, but when she realizes something fishy going on, it all becomes a desperate quest for answers, before it’s too late. For some reason this is marketed as a horror novel, but I found it to be much closer to a psychological thriller, and a very good one. Fast paced, and packing quite a punch. Very short, but extremely gripping. Everything moving so fast it’s over before you even know it. A somewhat too open ending for my taste, but a welcomed one overall. Joanna plays a wonderful heroine, and Bobbie a lovely and hilarious sidekick. Quite a bunch of feminist references too, which will be duly investigated at the appropriate time. Recommendable. *** The movie (1975) is a great adaptation. Katharine Ross plays a convincing Joanna, but Paula Prentiss perfectly nails Bobbie and is the absolute best of the movie by far; so crazy, and utterly adorable. Not nearly as good as the book, but very faithful, several direct quotes can be found all through the film. An ending that goes a bit beyond the original work, and possibly gives a more satisfying answer to the mystery. *** The remake (2004) is a terrible adaptation, and is critically panned for good reasons. Beside the protagonists and some general idea of the plot, everything else has been changed, and not really in a good way. No direct quotes, and lot of things added that doesn't make justice to Levin’s work. Not even a cast including stars like Kidman, Broderick, Midler, Close and Walken can save it. Un montón de referencias feministas también, que serán debidamente investigadas a su tiempo. Recomendable. *** La película (1975) es una excelente adaptación. Katharine Ross hace una convincente Joanna, pero Paula Prentiss acierta perfectamente a Bobbie y es absolutamente lo mejor de toda la película; tan alocada, y terriblemente adorable. No tan buena como el libro, pero muy fiel, varias citas directas pueden ser encontradas a lo largo del film. Y un final que va un poco más allá de la obra original, y posiblemente brinda una respuesta más satisfactoria al misterio. *** El remake (2004) es una terrible adaptación, y duramente criticada por buenas razones. What follows is a desperate quest for a place and someone to perform an abortion, in a country where it’s illegal, and the chances of infection and other health risks very high. A harrowing little memoir about the dangers of clandestine abortion, in a time when such topic was only whispered with fear and secrecy. I’m probably not the right audience for this type of book, I generally dislike memoirs; and I suppose Ernaux is a great author, being the receiver of the 2022 Nobel in Literature; however, I can’t say I enjoyed this at all. Some good quotes and very powerful paragraphs here and there, but hardly worth it when you have to endure so much rambling and being utterly dull when she tries to convey some supposedly deep insight. I really tried to sympathize with her situation, but it’s very hard to like a person when she makes so many merits to greatly dislike her (view spoiler)[, like being toxic with many people around her; deceiving her parents and proud of being an excellent liar; being extremely detached, caring only about herself and little else; taking a trip and going skiing blowing part of the money generously given by a friend for her costly operation; the list goes on (hide spoiler)]. Points for treading a touchy subject with honesty and moderate grace, and a gruesome depiction of clandestine abortion and after effects; still, far from easy to read, and not recommendable, unless you happen to be very interested in the subject. *** The movie (2021) is a great adaptation, vastly superior to the book imo. No artificially profound insights, and an Annie not exactly endearing, but most of what made her unlikable gone. Some small and big changes regarding the plot, but nothing that felt out of place, except maybe the shower scenes. Unlike the book, the movie has a lot of heart, you can connect with the character, and share her pain. Some very nice moments, and gruesome ones. Recommendable, maybe very. Lo que sigue es una desesperada búsqueda por un lugar y alguien que realice un aborto, en un país donde es ilegal, y las chances de una infección y otros riesgos para la salud muy altos. Una estresante pequeña memoria sobre los peligros del aborto clandestino, en una época donde ese tópico era sólo murmurado con miedo y secreto. Puntos por tratar un tema sensible con honestidad y moderada elegancia, y una horrorífica representación del aborto clandestino y sus efectos posteriores; aun así, lejos de ser fácil de leer, y no recomendable, a no ser que por casualidad te interese mucho el tema. *** La película (2021) es una genial adaptación, vastamente superior al libro creo. Sin artificialmente profundas declaraciones, y con una Annie no exactamente entrañable, pero con la mayor parte de lo que la hacía desagradable ausente. Algunos pequeños y grandes cambios con respecto a la trama, pero nada que pareciera fuera de lugar, excepto tal vez las escenas de las duchas. Right to the point, 15 min, without all the excessive repetition and almost none of the corporate stuff. And when Guy finally gets his big break, and Rosemary gets pregnant, everything seems happy and according to plan. But then Rosemary’s health starts deteriorating, and strange events start happening all around them. Something is wrong. Something is very wrong. A lovely horror classic. Not gruesome in the slightest, but scary enough to make your skin crawl through almost all the ride. Highly suspenseful. Consistently creepy. Very easy to read. Recommendable. And looking forward to the sequel. Thanks to Inciminci for this wonderful first buddy read. The movie (1968) is a decent adaptation. Extremely faithful to the book, yet not nearly as great as. Although nicely executed, the smooth pacing. the suspenseful atmosphere and the thrilling buildup hardly equals the quality displayed in the book. Some parts felt very awkward, and we never get to see Rosemary's baby, which I believe would'e made a much greater ending. You only had one job. Young Amélie-san, recently returned to Japan, through great pains secures a one-year job contract as a translator at the prest You only had one job. Young Amélie-san, recently returned to Japan, through great pains secures a one-year job contract as a translator at the prestigious Yumimoto Corporation. What follows is a mildly rocky start to a full speed spiral down the corporate ladder to the worst experience of her life. An amazingly engaging and hilarious start, five star worth. Around the middle however, as events start turning for the worse, it became a bit difficult to read and highly exasperating sometimes. All the characters, like Ms. Fubuki Mori, and especially Mr. Omochi, were extremely unlikable. Mr. Tenshi was the only redeemable one, yet sadly his protagonism was too short lived. One is left to wonder how someone like President Haneda got to the top. This was greatly enlightening about certain aspects of the Japanese work life, and especially about a western trying to accommodate to their customs. I think the inability to defend yourself, or others, is a free pass to a world of mistreatment. Some very excruciating moments, and a few ones way over the top. Some of it may be overly exaggerated of course, yet sadly I’ve watched certain movies, heard several things, and even read enough news to know the harsh reality described in this book is partly true, if not completely. I find the Japanese culture fascinating, although the corporate side, if it resembles anything like this, is one aspect I truly wish I never EVER have to face. Still, good enough to spend the time, fun, and valuable. Could greatly appeal to someone interested in the subject. *** Fear and Trembling (2003) is THE perfect adaptation. I mean except for a few aerial shots, a few childhood flashbacks and the music score, everything is 100% the book, without any deviations whatsoever. I don’t think there was a single dialog line not extracted directly from the book. Amazingly, Fubuki, Omochi, Tenshi and Haneda were exactly as I had pictured them. Joven Amélie-san, recientemente regresada a Japón, con grandes esfuerzos logra asegurarse un contrato de trabajo de un año como traductora en la prestigiosa Corporación Yumimoto. Lo que sigue es un levemente inestable comienzo hacia una rápida espiral en caída libre de la escalera corporativa hasta la peor pesadilla de su vida. Un asombrosamente atrapante e hilarante comienzo, merecedora de cinco estrellas. Alcanzando la mitad sin embargo, cuando los eventos empiezan a empeorar, se vuelve un poco difícil de leer y altamente exasperante a veces. Todos los personajes, como la Sta. O sea excepto por algunas tomas aéreas, un par de escenas de la niñez, y la música, todo es 100% el libro, sin ningún tipo de desviación en absoluto. Grammatical SADNESS. After leaving the Reptile House and uncle Monty behind, the Baudelaire orphans travel to Lake Lachrymose, to a secluded house on Grammatical SADNESS. After leaving the Reptile House and uncle Monty behind, the Baudelaire orphans travel to Lake Lachrymose, to a secluded house on the top of a perilous cliff; where they meet their new caretaker Aunt Josephine, a brave and fearless sweet old lady who loves grammar and is never afraid of anything, least of all realtors. A brief respite ensues, but not with much happiness; Captain Sham, a brand new nemesis, swiftly appears on their doorstep, and calamity strikes, yet again. No endearing beginnings this time, this third book goes almost straight from bleakness to tragedy. LIKED dear Aunt Josephine enough, but sadly, even with all her quirky traits and being a grammar obsessed person myself, she’s no Justice Strauss, or Monty material. Totally HATED Captain Sham, an utterly mischievous character, but civilized and charming, at least at the beginning, unlike the despicable Count Olaf of the first book, or the terrifying Stephano of the second, who were always mean from the start. Another nice addition to the series all around. The orphans still resourceful as ever, Violet with her inventions, Klaus with his intellect, and Sunny with her mighty biting. If there’s something that makes all the sadness bearable is the brief moments of happiness and the lovable new characters; and this one didn’t deliver much of either. The humor is still very good, with a few laughs and chuckles here and there. A somewhat darker sequel. Un breve respiro tiene lugar, pero no con mucha felicidad; el Capitán Sham, un totalmente nuevo nemesis, rápidamente aparece en su entrada, y la calamidad golpea, otra vez. Sin comienzos entrañables esta vez, este tercer libro va casi directamente derecho de frialdad a tragedia. Me GUSTO la querida Tía Josephine lo suficiente, pero lamentablemente, incluso con todos sus peculiares rasgos y siendo yo mismo una persona obsesiva de la gramática, no es una Justice Strauss, o material de Tío Monty. Totalmente ODIE al Capitán Sham, un personaje terriblemente taimado, pero civilizado y encantador, al menos al principio, a diferencia del despreciable Conde Olaf del primer libro, o el terrorífico Stephano del segundo, que fueron siempre malos desde el comienzo. Otra interesante adición a la serie en todo sentido. Los huérfanos ingeniosos como siempre, Violet con sus invenciones, Klaus con su intelecto, y Sunny con su ponderosa mordida. Si hay algo que hace que toda la tristeza sea soportable son los breves momentos de felicidad y los nuevos personajes entrañables; y éste no entrega mucho de ninguno. After their home burned, their parents died, and they narrowly escaped the evil clutches of uncle Olaf, Violet, Klaus and Sunny are taken to the care of a distant relative, Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, a BRILLIANT herpetologist and quirky nice guy. A brief respite of happiness ensues; until Stephano, a totally new character appears out of nowhere in their lives, and calamity strikes again. A wonderfully endearing beginning followed by a terrible succession of utterly sad events. LOVED Uncle Monty, although not as much as Justice Strauss. Totally HATED Stephano, one truly dreadful character, especially when brandishing his scary knife; a nice addition to the series, with much more depth and cunning than the totally different evil Count Olaf of the first book. The Orphans lovely as ever, never giving up, despite everything falling apart around them. Sunny and the Incredibly Deadly Viper were hilarious. After being rescued from a den, she grows inexplicably attached to Lucas. Having a dog isn't easy, and after teaching her to hide and not to bark, she nevertheless gets noticed in the apartments she's not allowed to live in. Barely escaping Animal Control and nearly put down because of her forbidden pit bull status in Denver, and after some other incidents too, Bella becomes lost. Finding herself separated from her beloved Lucas, nearly four hundred miles away, Bella begins a fantastic journey, through city and wilderness, to reach him. Making friends along the way, human and not, Bella is determined to find her way back to Lucas no matter what. A fairly enjoyable read. I specially enjoyed the bond between Bella and Big Kitten. For some reason I had this one on audio and the voices really didn't do it for me, so if you happen to want to read this I would suggest text. That doesn't mean I recommend it though, I loved the Purpose series books but I did not love this one. It's somewhat different, you get the Dogs POV like the others but not the multiple lives and Bailey is not in it. Bella is a wonderful doggie, she's a fantastic, but did not really grow on me like Bailey did. Still, a worthy read for the animal lover, heartwarming and moving at times. *** The movie is a decent adaptation of the book. Some things were omitted, as to be expected, but still all the main ingredients were there. The special effects were good, the acting not so much, pretty flat. Apenas escapando Control Animal y casi puesta a dormir por ser de de una raza prohibida pit bull en Denver, y después de otros incidentes también, Bella termina perdida. Encontrándose separada de su amado Lucas, a casi cuatrocientas millas lejos, Bella empieza un viaje fantástico, a través de ciudad y tierra salvaje, para alcanzarlo. Haciéndose de amigos en el camino, humanos y no, Bella está determinada a encontrar su camino de vuelta hacia Lucas, sin importar qué. Una lectura bastante disfrutable. Disfruté especialmente la amistad de Bella y Gran Gatito. Por alguna razón tenía esto en audio y las voces realmente no funcionaron conmigo, así que si se encuentran queriendo leer esto sugeriría texto. Eso sin embargo no significa que lo recomendaría, amé los libros de la serie Purpose pero no amé éste. Es algo diferente, tenés el punto de vista del perro como los otros pero no las multiples vidas y Bailey no está ahí. Bella es una perrita maravillosa, es fantástica, pero no creció en mí como lo hizo Bailey. Igual, una lectura valiosa para el amante del animal. amorosa y emotiva de a ratos. *** La película es una adaptación decente del libro. And she is going to die tonight. And tomorrow. And the day after tomorrow... Stuck in a death loop, Samantha starts to wonder. Is she cursed? Has she say or done anything to deserve this? And most importantly, can she break free? Can you stop Death? I love the time loop thing, and time travel. Sucker for it, every time. Groundhog’s Day is my ultimate favorite movie of all time, and it’s even mentioned in the book. Sam Kingston is hardly a Regina George, but certainly has enough attitudes to be part of the ‘Plastics’, or ‘Bitches’, however you like to call them. This novel deals with some important topics like sisterhood, redemption, and bullying. I specially loved this book’s heartfelt take on friendship, veeery misguided friendship on several occasions, but real loving friendship nonetheless. Many endearing moments and lovely quotes to remember. Izzy and Kent were awesome. Slow burn was spectacular. The ending was fairly predictable, but the uplifting trip to get there was absolutely more than worth it. Time thing makes me undulate. I’m not sure if this is a great book per se, but it really was a great book for me. Unputdownable. Fav status earned. If you like any of the movies listed above, I’m pretty confident you should like it. Y va a morir esta noche. Y mañana. Y el día siguiente a mañana… Atrapada en un círculo de muerte, Sam empieza a preguntarse. Está maldita? Dijo o hizo algo para merecer esto? Y aún más importante, acaso puede liberarse? Se puede detener a la Muerte? Amo lo del círculo infinito, y viaje a través del tiempo. Caigo a pleno con ello, siempre. El Día de la Marmota es mi absoluta película preferida de todos los tiempos, e incluso es mencionada en el libro. Sam Kingston está lejos de ser una Regina George, pero ciertamente tiene suficientes actitudes para ser parte del grupo de las ‘Plásticas’, o ‘Perras’, como te guste llamarlas. Esta novela trata con importantes tópicos como hermandad, redención y bullying. Amé especialmente la sentida forma en que esta novela trata la amistad, amistad muuuy mal direccionada en varias ocasiones, pero amistad real y amorosa sin embargo. Muchos momentos entrañables y preciosas citas para recordar. Izzy y Kent fueron terriblemente adorables. El ardor lento fue espectacular. El final es bastante predecible, pero el viaje inspirador para llegar hasta ahí más que valió la pena. Lo del tiempo me hace ondular. No estoy seguro de que este sea un gran libro en sí mismo, pero fue un gran libro para mí. No podía dejar de leerlo. Un lugar en Favoritos ganado. Si te gusta alguna de las películas mencionadas arriba, estoy bastante seguro que podrías disfrutarlo.
