it was amazing
bookshelves: love-of-animals, favourites, read-in-2011

I bought this book sometime in the past month or so based on several recommendations, it sat on the coffee table as a reminder, yet in all the time I never once read any reviews or previews of the story.
This afternoon I picked it up to read around noon and finished it just before 6pm tonight.
I loved the voice of "the dog," through every incarnation, from the very first lines "One day it occurred to me that the warm, squeaky, smelly things squirming around next to me were my brothers and sister. I was very disappointed."
W. Bruce Cameron pulls back from being overly sentimental with every passing followed by a rebirth that pulls you immediately into the new life and the new situation. Emotional. Hilarious. Thought provoking. "A Dog's Purpose" is about the undying love and bond between man and his best friend, more than that it explores the concept of our individual purposes in life and why we are here with humor, although you'll undoubtedly shed a few tears.

Mike Beautifully said, Cheri. Absolutely loved this one myself.

Cheri Thank you, Mike. I'm so glad to hear that someone else loved this book, too. I was so glad to have read it years later, I lost a less than one year old puppy and my 16 1/2 year old Golden...

Mike Lovely summary you did for this one, Cheri. One of my very favorite books and I enjoyed the follow-up as well. I see the movie is coming out next week and I'm hopeful that it adapts to the big-screen well.

Cheri Thank you, Mike! I always say that my little Halle is a reincarnation of my Golden Retriever Bailey, a typical Golden, all velcro dog and always so happy to see me, be with me. Halle is obsessed with Golden Retrievers, and seems to believe she is one, even though she is only 5 lbs on a fat day. Halle came to me to help keep Bailey with me longer (I'd lost my first Maltese a month earlier, but Bailey always considered her *her* puppy, and when she was gone, she began to go downhill, so getting Halle was my vet's recommendation). Please tell me how you like the big-screen version - I will definitely see it, but I am debating if I want to see it in the theatre or wait for watch it at home!!

Lovely review, Cheri, thank you. The puppy quote gave me a nice, warm-hearted chuckle. I'm a dog lover, and my beagle Baxter loves me too. :-)

Toni This book sounds great. I've had four incredible dogs, all wonderful relationships. If I started describing then now, it would take pages and pages, so I won't make the attempt. They are lovely companions.

Linda Thank you for reminding how much I loved this book. A friend just lost her Skip last week. I believe this book may bring her some comfort Perfect timing!

Linda You've made this book sound so fun and tempting! It's a good thing my cats aren't into reading. I'm going to give this one some consideration. Great review!

Cheri Elyse, I'm so glad to hear that you're reading this, too. I'm actually about to take "my" Sophia to the movies today and ran across the ad for this movie in the process. I used to take my first Golden Retriever to the movies with us, to that drive-in in Blossom Hill? I think that's where it was. Load the car filled with the kids and Maddie and treats. In the theatre? I'd take Halle, but she fits easily on my lap!

Cheri Anne, of course you're a dog lover, it shows in everything you say and do!! Baxter is a great name for a beagle, love it!

Cheri Toni, I really have had very few years in my life where I have not had a dog. I grew up on a dog, pretty literally, since my mother used to put me on our Irish Setter for naps, and I'm pretty sure that dog considered me his puppy. Very indignant when I tried to give up crawling on all fours, kept knocking me down (albeit gently) where I belonged. You can take up as many pages as you want if you wish! I'm glad your dogs have all been lovely companions!

Cheri Linda, I'm so glad that this review reached you at just the right time. I think not very long after I read this my best friend lost her dog rather tragically. I gave her a copy to provide her with some comfort and I'd like to think that it did. I hope it helps your friend, as well.

Cheri Linda, I think most people would say this book is "cute" and "touching," think..... a cross between Richard Paul Evans and Nicholas Sparks about dogs, but it's the story itself (and saying any more would ruin that) that sets it apart. The writing is fine, but ... like the best of Evans and the best of Sparks, very sentimental. Honestly, I think you would love this... but you might want to have tissues handy!

Natalie Wow! I have never give a book five stars. Now I must read the book then see the movie.

Deanna Excellent review :)

Linda I LOVE "tissue" books! You know me well. Haha

Norma ~ The Sisters Excellent review and sounds extremely good! Going to add!

Cheri Natalie, I tend to rate books like this one by how much I loved it plus against similar books. In other words, a five star in classics is a different type of book altogether than popular fiction or science fiction, etc. At any rate, I loved this and hope you do, too. I look forward to seeing your review!

Cheri Thanks, Deanna!

Cheri Linda, I *do* think I know you pretty well, especially since we have spent so little time together in person!!! We do have a lot in common!

Cheri Thanks, Norma,! Wonderful to hear, now I can look forward to your review, too!!

Cheri Elyse, I haven't seen the movie, I doubt I'll see it in the theatres, but I'll see it eventually. Was it sadder than the book??

Amanda Great review, Cheri! I devoured it in a single afternoon. Soooo touching!

Cheri Thanks so much, Amanda, I am so glad to see your 4 stars for this. I think "touching" is what he does best! I don't know if you've seen the movie yet... but if you enjoyed the book, I think you'll enjoy the movie, too!

Paula K “Undying love between humans and dogs” is so well put forth in this book, Cheri. So nice to see we both think highly of this book and our other friends…🐶🐾🐾

Cheri Paula, I have read several of his books, and I have a couple yet to read, and I will likely read this someday in the future, again. Love your comment!
