Boy, this one had A LOT of stuff going on. Buckle up, kids, and I’ll take you on a crazy acid trip explain things . . . sort of.

Our story begins in the wee hours of Halloween when noob Erin is being accosted by local hooligan Freddie Krueger while attempting to complete her paper route. Luckily for Erin, the other paper girls have already hit the streets and appear just in time to save the day. Not so lucky is the first impression presented . . .

Uh. Yeah.

So anyfarts, the girls make their escape and immediately run into another problem when they make plans to divide and conquer the paper delivery. While attempting to get payback on the thugs responsible, they instead find something they really weren’t expecting . . .

Once again they narrowly get away and finally come face to face with the potential bad guys who look an awful lot like this fella when their masks are removed . . .

We then discover the key to solving the entire WTFery that has been going on might be in a tiny little device with the logo of a bitten apple on it . . .

But wait, that’s not all. No, there are DINOSAURS added to the mix next. Y’all know there’s only room in my heart for one dinosaur story . . .

(Thank you to EVERYONE who has sent me this gif. I finally had a chance to use it.)

There’s also aliens who speak some form of hipsterish Shakespearean throwback/fastforward language that had me all . .

As well as another dude who bore a striking resemblance to . . .

Not to mention the bizarre dream sequences starring folks like The Gipper . . .

Since I’m stupid it took me awhile to figure out this was a Throwback Thursday selection. I thought Mac was just a homophobic asshole with her remarks (and she was), but supposedly it was the language of the time (and sadly it was) so it was used in that one frame. Eventually with various Dukakis references and a shout-out to one of my all-time faves . . .

I was able to put two and two together. It still didn’t make this any less of a hot mess, however. I debated giving this 2 Stars but this is the dude who wrote Saga FFS. There's no excuse for this one.

ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you, NetGalley!

Sam Quixote I thought it was pants too but it just won the 2016 Eisner for Best New Series - bah!

Erica *sigh*
You read this wrong.
Please fix your opinion.
Because it's WRONG, you wrong-reader.

*grumbling something about kids these days...*

Kelly (and the Book Boar) I will not go in the shame corner for this one!

Erica I will drag you there, kicking and screaming, because I need a break and someone has to watch the place while I'm away!

Timothy I thought it was pretty awesome. I guess I have no taste. ;)

Brian How someone could like Saga and not this, for the reasons you listed, makes zero sense to me. The completely random sequences, monsters, heroes, and events of Saga are totally fine with you, but the same instances in Paper Girls aren't? This is Vaughn's style, you either like it across the board or you don't.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Thanks for informing me what I'm allowed to like. Super helpful : )

Dude, are you trolling here?
Why on earth would someone's opinion on a book in light of their opinion on a different book have to make sense to you? Were Goodreads users supposed to submit our reviews of Saga and Paper Girls to you for a grade, or something? Because it sounds like you're putting yourself in a position of authority in regard to this particular set of graphic novels and that's not how this works.

Something else that may not make sense to you: it is possible to enjoy one of Vaughn's stories and not another, regardless of his writing style.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) I'm pretty sure a memo went out years ago explaining to everyone who doesn't write their own reviews that I read everything wrong and it is their responsibility to remind me of it on the regular.

Yes, but, I already DID that for this wrongly-read book. There are lots of other wrongly-read books on here that need policing. This review has already been chastised.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) But you forgot the part where I'm never allowed to read anything by Vaughan ever again. Glad I don't have the giant compendium of Y: The Last Man sitting on my own-it-but-haven't-read-it shelves. Oh wait . . . .

Erica No, no. That's not what he said. He said you have to have the same reaction to all of Vaughan's stories. If you like one, you have to like them all. Conversely, if you hate one, you have to hate them all. It's a simple concept, why don't you understand it? Your opinions on books should conform to your prior opinions on similar books and you should never deviate from what you've already prescribed yourself.
So keep reading Vaughan but you really need to decide if you like his style or not because this whole cherrypicking thing you've got going on just doesn't make sense.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) See, I can't even read comments correctly. How the hell am I supposed to know if I like a book or not????? Thank goodness for all the Brians out there.

Erica Thank goodness, indeed.

Ryan Provstgaard How could you miss the fact that this was in the 80's??

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Ryan wrote: "How could you miss the fact that this was in the 80's??"

Because I didn't read anything about it before reading it. How is that so hard to understand???

But its in every frame of the artwork like a slap in the face. I feel like half the bad reviews on here have a trend and thats the high expectations of Saga and that there wasn't dialog that moved the story. But the thing is the artwork told the story. The dialog helped it out but its all there in the art. And those with high expectations because of other work I feel like are setting them self up for disappointment.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Good news is people are allowed to like or dislike anything they like for whatever reason they want and their personal review space is for their opinion. Perhaps you should post about how stupid everyone else is in your space.

You're right and Im not here to say you're wrong. But you posted it to begin with. Just trying to have a discussion about how I liked how the author and illustrator worked so well together at telling a story that I was only curious how you could have missed something like the 80's vibe from the get go.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) Because I'm stupid I guess. Sorry I didn't pick up some person calling someone a "faggot" on page 1 as totally tubular and 1980s and not present-day homophobia. I don't know you, dude, and since you haven't bothered to post your own opinions about how great you think this is in your own space, but choose to go piss on other's I don't want to have a discussion with you. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

Ryan Provstgaard But I have written a review. Go check it out and piss me off if you'd like. Im not here to piss you off, thats just you letting your self get pissed.

Kelly (and the Book Boar) You JUST NOW wrote a review dickhead. Fuck off.
