So... not amazing, unfortunately. In fact the only thing I super loved about this was the illustrations.
It's a little difficult for me not to compare this to Vaughn's other ongoing series Saga, which had me hooked from the very first installment.
This was was very okay.
Vol. 1 could've benefitted from being a bit longer, providing a little more depth of plot and characterization.
I was really feeling a young, diverse female cast on an 80's science fiction adventure. I was even getting a Stranger Things vibe from it at the beginning.
But alas, there just isn't a lot of substance here.
I'll likely try out Vol. 2 before writing the series off to see if it gets its footing, but a disappointing introduction to say the least.

I didn't realize it's from the same author as Saga. The style is very different!

This comic was one of biggest disappointments for me, I'm glad I'm not the only one since it's been getting high praises everywhere. I love Vaughan's Saga and really liked Y the last man so I expected lot better.
@Lainey - yes! The writing style is pretty similar once you get into it but there's a lot lacking in comparison to Saga!
@Ivan - I agree I thought it was going to be much better, as I've read all of Saga & a sample of Y: The Last Man & both are great! I guess they can't all be winners lol.
Such a bummer you didn't like this. I was expecting nothing from it, so I was pleasantly surprised by it. I hope volume 2 grips you better
That's such a shame. Saga is just so compelling (and pretty much perfect). I was going to buy this one eventually...but I think I might just check it out from the library instead.
Awh it's alright Caleb! I think it was a little ruined by my comparisons to Vaughn's other works for sure. But I will definitely try out volume 2 before quitting!
Yea I just dunno about this one Liz. It was *alright*, the illustrations were nice. But checking it out is definitely a better option I think. I would send you my copy if I could haha!
Totally agree with you on everything you just said. Disappointing and okay sums its appeal and the main attraction definitely were the illustrations and the colour. It does have a stranger things vibe but lack of context and characterisation dashed out all of it
